Call For Papers
Canon will be accepting submissions starting March 1st, 2010 from graduate students at the New School for Social Research for our Spring 2010 edition. The upcoming issue will be produced in collaboration with the Gender Studies Conference and the Politically Queer Conference, both of which will be held at the New School this spring.
The Gender Studies Conference, which will be held March 26th and 27th, explores the politics of the return of gender studies to the New School. The conference will focus on issues of feminist methodology in the social sciences, the subject of feminism in relation to deconstruction and critical theory, and the general difficulties in effecting institutional change within academia. One question the conference will raise is whether there is a contribution the New School can make to gender studies and if so, what form that contribution might take.
The Politically Queer conference, scheduled for May 1st, will examine how scholars can discover productive sites of study within queer theory today, the boundaries and limitations of queer inquiry, and the connections and tensions between academia and activism. Of particular interest is the category of the politically queer. Is queer theory always-already political? Or is there (and should there be) a division between theory and praxis, between academia and activism?
In the spirit of collaboration both with the conferences and among disciplines, Canon welcomes submissions broadly relating to either conference, as well as journalistic accounts and responses by presenters, participants, and attendees of the conferences. We are also interested in essays and commentaries which address: the connection between queer theory and gender studies, the roles of institutional structures and histories (including those of the New School!) in theory and activism, and the possibility or necessity of the utopian in thinking gender and sexuality.
Before submitting, please see the Canon Style Guidelines.
Please send abstracts and submissions to canon@newschool.edu. Also please note that all conference papers will be considered for publication in Canon.Justin Humphreys and Rachel Signer, co-editors, Canon Magazine
